United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi will be visiting her constituency Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday for the first time after retaining the seat in the recent Lok Sabha elections. She will be meeting all the MLAs and ex-MLAs along with the party workers and leaders of the constituency.
Sonia Gandhi retained the Rae Bareli seat by defeating BJP's Dinesh Pratap Singh by over 1.67 lakh votes. Her win in Uttar Pradesh's constituency was the only saving grace for the Congress party which failed to win any other stats in India's most electorally-significant state, including Rahul Gandhi losing in Amethi.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will also be visiting Rae Bareli for the first time after the party's debacle in the Lok Sabha elections. She will take part in review meetings that will take place on Wednesday to discuss the reasons behind the party's poor performance in the general elections in the state. Jyotiraditya Scindia, the general secretary in-charge of western Uttar Pradesh will also be a part of the review meetings in Delhi and Lucknow on June 11 and 14 respectively.
On June 4, a meeting was held at Priyanka's residence in New Delhi, which was attended by President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress committee, Raj Babbar and other general secretaries, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, to rebuild the party at the block level, post its humiliating defeat in the hands of the BJP in May 2019.
Congress faced a massive debacle in the recent Lok Sabha elections in which the party won 52 seats across the country while the BJP won a massive 303. Party president Rahul Gandhi, who is facing a lot of internal strife within the party, also recently took a trip to his new constituency Wayanad, where he thanked his supporters and renewed his attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP. Accusing the party of using the poison of hate and divide, he vowed to keep up the fight against the ideology of the BJP. He made these statements on the same day PM Modi visited the Guruvayur temple in Kerala following which he addressed a rally of BJP 'karyakartas' there.
