'This is Hindustan not Pakistan': BJP accuses Congress of renaming layouts in Bengaluru to appease minorities
The BJP has alleged that Ajmal Baig has proposed a plan to rename some stretches in his layout for reasons best known to him
What's in a name? Well, there is a lot more than what meets the eye, believes Ajmal Baig, the Corporator for Bapujinagar ward No.134 in Bengaluru of the Congress party. The BJP has alleged that Ajmal has proposed a plan to rename some stretches in his layout for reasons best known to him.
Congress Corporator's plan alleged by BJP:
Present name - Pipeline Road, Shamanna Garden underpass Road
To be renamed as - Ghamour Road
The stretch from Sunni Chowk to Mysuru Road to be named as Subania Masjid Road
The stretch from Santosh Tent Road to Shobha Tent Road to be named as Jamia Masjid Road
The stretch from Shamanna Garden 6th cross to Bapuji Nagar 17th cross to be renamed Khadath Masjid Road
The stretch from Bapuji Nagar 1st main to Bapuji Nagar 17th cross to be renamed as Heera Masjid Road
134 Bapuji Nagar ward to be renamed as Fathima Bi Layout and Ameer Kalmi Nagar
The BJP has also alleged that Ajmal wants to rename a layout in his ward and label his father's name. Leader of opposition in municipal council and BJP member Padmanabha Reddy has written to the Mayor on the issue:
To
The Honourable Mayor
BBMP, Bengaluru
Respected Sir
Subject: According to rule no.51, on 9th September 2018 in accordance with the gazette notification, the renaming of roads at Bapuji Nagari needs to be presented before the council once again.
According to above mentioned information on 9th November 2018 some roads in Bapuji Nagar will be renamed as Ghamour Road, Subania Masjid Road, Jamia Masjid Road, Khadrath Masjid Road and Heera Masjid Road.
According to the rule book, roads and landmarks should be named after achievers. Renaming it to other names is a violation of rule no.51of the KMC(Karnataka Municipal Corporations) Act in the Palike. The proposal must be presented before the council and debated.
Regards, Padmanabha Reddy
(LoP) BBMP
Speaking to Republic TV, Padmanabha Reddy said, "I strongly condemn the proposal to rename layouts mooted by Congress Corporator Ajmal Baig. According to rule no.51 of the KMC Act, it is a violation. This is Hindustan not Pakistan."
Following the footsteps of Ajmal Baig, BJP Corporator Umesh Shetty from Govindaraja Nagar ward in Bengaluru has planned to rename two layouts, labelling the names of Hindu Gods. As the Corporators from BJP and Congress clash regarding renaming layouts, many residents suggest that it won't make any change to their lives.
