Earlier, in a major controversy, micro-blogging website Twitter restored the social media handle of Indian Army's Srinagar-based 15 Corps, namely Chinar Corps, on Friday afternoon, a day after suspending it. The Twitter account of the Chinar Corps was suspended on Thursday, after it was targeted by hundreds of fake handles run by the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI and ISPR, as per sources.
The Chinar Corps oversee counter-terrorism operations in the Kashmir Valley and at the Line of Control (LoC). While Twitter did not give any satisfactory response as to why it had suspended that handle which had over 40,000 followers, sources told that Twitter has told the army that they will restore the handle by Friday evening. Since 1989, when Pakistan launched its proxy war against India, Chinar Corps has been successfully maintaining the territorial integrity of the nation.
In the last 77 years of its existence, the Chinar Corps has become one of the most decorated corps of the Army, having been conferred with four Victoria Crosses, four Military Crosses, 13 Param Vir Chakra, 20 Ashok Chakra and numerous other gallantry awards and citations. These honours highlight the selfless sacrifices of its valiant warriors.
Lt Gen Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon, a highly respected General, who knows Kashmir well, took over as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps in February 2019.
