President Kovind in Iceland; counterpart condemns Pulwama Attack

President Ram Nath Kovind discusses terrorism with Iceland President Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson on Tuesday. Both leaders condemned terrorism around the world

President Ram Nath Kovind met his counterpart Iceland’s President Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson on Tuesday. The two held wide-ranging bilateral talks and discussed trade, investment, and technology. Reportedly, both the leaders also discussed terrorism as an issue in the meeting. The office of the President thanked Jóhannesson for his understanding of the issue in a tweet.

Iceland condemns Pulwama 

According to a press statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs, both the leaders discussed terrorism and also agreed that terrorism is a violation of human rights and condemned terrorism around the world. The statement also said that Iceland supported India and showed solidarity over the February 14 Pulwama Attacks.

President given grand welcome

The President has arrived in Iceland on Monday. Ram Nath Kovind was given a ceremonial welcome by the Iceland President Guðni Thorlacius Jóhannesson. President Kovind also addressed the Indian Diaspora in Iceland and lauded their contribution to local society in Iceland. He also addressed a business delegation there. The President delivered an address at the University of Iceland on ‘India-Iceland partnership toward a greener planet’.

President Ram Nath Kovind is on a three-nation tour and is also slated to visit Switzerland and arrive at Slovenia on September 15. The President is expected to head back on September 17.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar also tweeted informing about the President's visits- 

President Ram Nath Kovind is the second Indian President to visit Iceland after former President APJ Abdul Kalam visited the country in 2005.
