Maharashtra: The Maharashtra prisons department is initiating several upgrades for inmates, including the installation of colour television sets and washing machines across the states.

The authorities have decided to replace the nonfunctional old black and white sets with modern colour television sets, As it was noticed in many instances, the inmates repaired the machines themselves due to lack of repair facilities in the prison. The significant upgrades aim to improve the living conditions of over 40,000 prisoners across different facilities.

Better Living Facilities For Inmates

According to the officials the Prison Department has invested in up to, 1,000 television sets of different sizes aiming to provide inmates with approximately six to seven hours of entertainment every day. The initiatives will help to inmates to remain busy and improve their mental well-being.

In a TOI report, Amitabh Gupta, Director General (Prisons) said, "Access to some sort of basic entertainment will help the inmates maintain mental balance. The television sets will keep them occupied, and they will not need to step out of the barracks without any reason."

The television sets will be turned on from noon to 3 PM and again from 6 PM to 10 PM. Access to televisions will also help prisoners to be aware of what is happening outside the jail, officials emphasized.

Similarly, the installation of washing machines across prisons will drastically improve living conditions, as the prisoners were expected to wash their clothes manually.

These steps undertaken by the Maharashtra Prisons department will improve the overall health and well-being of the inmates and can be set as an example for other facilities in the country.
