Dalit man thrashed to death
According to the police, Jagmail had a dispute with Rinku and some other men. Rinku along with some other people took Jagmael to his house where they claim he was brutally thrashed by them. The victim was taken to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research where he reportedly succumbed to his injuries. The doctors say his legs were amputated and he was even forced to drink his urine.
Following the incident, Punam Kangra a member of Punjab State SC Commission said an FIR has been lodged into the matter. "A strict action will be taken against the accused as well as the police if they have delayed the investigation in the matter," she added. According to sources, a case has been registered against the accused of the abduction and wrongful confinement under various sections of the Indian Penal Cose (IPC) and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at Lehra Police station.
Protest erupts demanding justice
The locals have been protesting outside the SDM office, meanwhile, the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission assured they will urge the police to take action against the culprits. Various organisations have been demanding justice for the victim.
The locals protesting against the killing claimed the local Congress leaders were involved in the incident. They were quoted saying, "Chaudhuries and local Congress leaders brutally assaulted Jagmael. Even the police and the doctors did not take appropriate action in the matter. Even though the accused have been arrested, action should also be taken against those who showed negligence," said one of the locals.
"We will continue our protest until justice is delivered to the deceased's family. We are demanding compensation as well as a government job to one of the family members. We will neither allow post-mortem of the body now will conduct funeral until our demands are met," a protestor said.
The incident also attracted the attention of politicians as Sangrur MP and Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Punjab unit president Bhagwant Mann sharply reacted to the unfortunate incident.
"The shameful incident that took place in Changali Wala is condemnable. I will raise the matter in the Lok Sabha so that the pressure is built on the Punjab Police. We demand Rs 5 lakh compensation and a government job are given to a member of the family," Mann said in a video message from Delhi.
