Wayanad/Shimla: As rain fury wreaked havoc from south to north in India, around 53 people are still missing in Himachal Pradesh after a cloudburst incident occurred on August 1, leaving at least eight people dead while over 330 people died in Kerala's Wayanad district following three massive landslides that struck the villages in Meppadi panchayat on July 30. Hundreds of people are still missing as rescuers continue their efforts to trace the missing one.

The Wayanad landslide tragedy has left the nation in a state of concern as Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while addressing the Parliament, had said that Kerala was given prior warnings about possible landslides but it didn't take necessary actions.

Advanced radars, drones, and heavy machinery were used by rescue teams on Saturday, the fifth day of the tragic landslides that killed hundreds in Kerala's Wayanad district, to locate survivors or deceased. The state government also announced plans to establish a new township to rehabilitate displaced victims.

“The people were not able to recover from the past situations and this incident has occurred again,” he said.

According to ADGP Kumar, authorities are getting calls for around 400 people following landslides. ADGP, Law & Order Kerala, MR Ajith Kumar said, " This is the 5th day of rescue and relief operations...we are trying to see how many bodies can be recovered. The entire area has been divided into 6 zones...we have been concentrating on the river zone...along with Police officers, forest guards, fire force and coast guards and local people, are also on the job..as per district administration, they are getting calls for around 400 people...there were people who were from other states also, who used to work here..."

After visiting the nandslide-affected areas, Actor and Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Mohanlal said, " We get to know about the depth of this incident when we go up and see ourselves. There is a lot of mud and not sure if people are still trapped inside. I thank everyone who is working behind this from the bottom of my heart...this is one of the biggest tragedies India has ever seen...we won't be able to retrieve back what we already lost but we need to make sure how we can help these people for their future."

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday donated Rs 1 lakh and his wife TK Kamala contributes Rs 33,000 to Chief Minister's Disaster Relief Fund.

  • Kerala Landslides: Rescue Ops Continue on 5th Day With Over 1,300 Rescuers Roped in

Search operations started early Saturday with more than 1,300 rescuers, heavy machinery and sophisticated equipment being deployed to look for survivors from the ravages of the landslides that have killed more than 200 people. Private companies specialising in the field of search and rescue, and volunteers have also joined the operations led by the army, police and emergency service units.

  • Kerala Landslides: As per officials, 210 bodies and 134 body parts have been recovered till now, including 96 males, 85 females and 29 children.
  • Kerala Landslides: The number of bodies claimed by their kin stood at 146. The administration has completed the post-mortem of 207 bodies and 134 body parts found from the incident site.

According to the officials, 84 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals in Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts while 187 have been discharged. 273 people have been brought to hospitals from the incident site.
