Rescue operations save over 200 people stranded at Manali-Leh road

Security personnel rescued over 200 people who were stranded at the Manali-Leh road in Rohtang due to heavy snowfall on October 7. This operation was jointly carried out by the district administration, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Rohtang rescue team. The district administration informed ANI that over 150 vehicles including many army vehicles were left stranded on Rohtang Pass due to the untimely snow. The situation was reviewed by the Station House officer of Manali along with his team.  

The police were helped by the well-equipped team of volunteers - ‘Raptor’. They paved the way for vehicles by shovelling snow from the tracks. The administration also asked people not to cross Rohtang Pass to avoid any kind of mishappening. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light rainfall for 24 hours as of Monday.  

Sub Divisional Magistrate message to people 

The Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Manali, Raman Garsanghi while speaking to media said, "Today Rohtang pass has received six inches of snow and consequently some Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses are stuck in it. Anyone planning to move to Lahaul Spiti and Ladakh should postpone their plans till the situation attains normalcy. All the passengers have been evacuated and traffic has been regulated so as not to create any chaos at the Rohtang top”.

Rains in Himachal Pradesh 

During the weekend, isolated places in Himachal Pradesh received light to moderate rains. Pachhad area in Sirmour district received the maximum rainfall at 29 mm, the Meteorological (MeT) department said on Saturday. Among other places in the state, Kalpa received 12 mm rainfall, followed by Mashobra (4 mm), Solan (3 mm), Shimla and Pooh (2 mm each) and Manali and Kufri (1 mm each) since Friday evening, Shimla MeT Centre Director Manmohan Singh said. He said the maximum temperatures in most parts of the state increased by 2-3 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Una recorded the highest temperature in the state at 30.3 degrees Celsius, while the lowest temperature was in Lahaul and Keylong at 3 degrees Celsius each.
