The Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a group of disorders that weaken connective tissues supporting the skin, bones, blood vessels, and many other organs and tissues. Defects in connective tissues cause the signs and symptoms of these conditions, which range from mildly loose joints to life-threatening complications. They are generally characterized by joint hypermobility (joints that stretch further than normal), skin hyperextensibility (skin that can be stretched further than normal), and tissue fragility. The rare disorder affects only 1 in 5,000 individuals worldwide. Many people with the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes have soft, velvety skin that is highly stretchy and fragile. Affected individuals tend to bruise easily, and some types of condition also cause abnormal scarring.
