Sonia Gandhi and other Congress leaders to meet Sheikh Hasina

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, along with former PM Manmohan Singh and Anand Sharma is set to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday.

A Congress delegation led by Congress president Sonia Gandhi is set to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday. She is currently in India for a 4-day official visit. Former PM Manmohan Singh and senior leader Anand Sharma will accompany Gandhi. They are expected to discuss the strengthening of bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh during the meeting. Hasina, who is the longest-serving PM of Bangladesh had assumed office in 2009 when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was in power. Singh had visited Bangladesh in 2011.

PM Modi- Sheikh Hasina meet 

The PM held talks with Hasina on a range of issues. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Raveesh Kumar, their second meeting in 10 days showcased the robustness of the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Speaking to the press later, Hasina recalled India’s role in the Bangladesh Liberation War. She also expressed a desire to start more development projects through joint co-operation with India.  

She said, "The trajectory of our excellent bilateral relations was unveiled in 1971 when Bangladesh had joined the great liberation war under the leadership of the father of the nation- Rehman. I recall the gratitude, the role of the people and the government of India in the war of liberation of Bangladesh. This would remain an eternal milestone in our bilateral relations. Distinguished guests, I thank all of you to be present here today, especially PM Modi. Besides, I thank all who have been involved in the implementation of these projects who have been working hard for the materialization of these projects. My heartiest thanks to all of you. In the future, I hope, through our joint cooperation, we can inaugurate many more such development projects."
