Meerut: A 17-year-old teenager from Uttar Pradesh reportedly hammered his best friend to death after the latter allegedly stole his girlfriend’s videos and blackmailed her. The accused confessed to the police that his friend, Abhinav, had accessed pictures and videos of his girlfriend and used them to blackmail her.

Reports stated that Abhinav, a Class 11 student, went missing after leaving home for coaching classes on Saturday.

The accused and Abhinav were neighbors and attended the same coaching center to prepare for engineering entrance exams. While Abhinav usually rode his scooter, the accused, a 12th-grade student, would take the pillion seat.

After leaving for tuition together on Saturday, Abhinav failed to return home. His worried parents lodged an FIR after inquiring with the accused, who claimed he did not know about Abhinav’s whereabouts.

As the investigation began, police discovered Abhinav’s body near a tube well behind Garh Margh in Meerut. A hammer, allegedly used in the murder, was also recovered from the scene.

CCTV footage revealed the two boys together shortly before the crime, following which the police detained the accused for questioning. During the interrogation, the accused admitted to killing Abhinav with a hammer.

Reports suggest the accused planned Abhinav’s murder after discovering that Abhinav had transferred videos of his girlfriend onto his phone. According to the accused, Abhinav had been blackmailing his girlfriend, pressuring her to meet him against her will.

How Did the Crime Unfold?

According to police, the accused told Abhinav that he wanted to sell his phone on Saturday. The duo visited a shop and sold the phone for ₹8,000. They later ate at a restaurant before heading home.

While returning, the accused stopped near a tube well, considering it the perfect spot to execute his plan. He took a hammer out of his bag and struck Abhinav on the head. The accused admitted to the police that he continued hitting Abhinav even after he fell to the ground.

Speaking to the media, Meerut City SP Ayush Vikram Singh said: "The accused has said there were some videos of him and his girlfriend on his phone and Abhinav had stolen them. He was upset and he planned this. We have recovered the body and the hammer. We have taken the accused into custody. He is a minor and he will be produced in court. We will scan the CCTV footage to see if anyone else is involved in the crime and take action. The family is demanding action against everyone involved and we will do it".
