UPI to be Accepted at Paris’s Luxurious Galeries Lafayette Ahead of Olympics
UPI is now accepted at the famous Galeries Lafayette department store making it a global initiative ahead of Paris Olympic
Paris: India's super-fast payment system, UPI, is about to take a giant leap as the flagship store of Galeries Lafayette on Haussmann Boulevard is now accepting UPI payments ahead of the Paris Olympic, to give a boost to India’s Indigenous payment system.
This move brings Prime Minister Modi's vision of making UPI a worldwide payment system one step closer. UPI, created by NPCI in 2016, lets you pay for things in a flash using your phone.
This comes after a successful launch at the Eiffel Tower earlier this year. This expansion of UPI acceptance marks a significant step towards making it a global payment option.
“On July 3, 2024, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) became live at the flagship store of the world-renowned Galeries Lafayette in Haussmann, Paris. This expands the acceptance of UPI in Paris after a successful launch at the iconic Eiffel Tower,” stated a press release by the Indian Embassy in France.
At the launch, India's Ambassador to France, Jawed Ashraf, demonstrated the in-store purchase using UPI. The payment was done right in front of the CEO of Galeries Lafayette Nicolas Houze, and Alain Lacour, the chairman of Lyra Group.
Jawed Ashraf also recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first international launch of UPI in Singapore in 2018 making it a global initiative,” according to the press release.
