New Delhi: The Finance Ministry has revealed that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded seven projects in India worth USD 750 million in the financial year 2023-24. Notably, none of these projects were related to enhancing voter turnout, contrary to claims made by the Trump administration. The latest annual report from India's Finance Ministry reveals that USAID funded seven projects in India worth USD 750 million in the 2023-24 financial year. These projects focus on various sectors, including, agriculture, water, sanitation, renewable energy, climate adaptation programmes and others.
Notably, no funding was allocated for enhancing voter turnout, contrary to claims made by the Trump administration. It has also been mentioned that USAID has provided over USD 17 billion in economic assistance to India since 1951, supporting over 555 projects across various sectors. The agency's assistance has focused on promoting economic growth, reducing poverty, and improving living standards in India.
Controversy Over Voter Turnout Claims
The Trump administration had claimed that USAID had allocated $21 million to India to boost voter turnout. However, the Finance Ministry's report has revealed that no such funding was made for voter turnout. Instead, the USD 21 million was allocated to Bangladesh.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed concern over the Trump administration's claims, stating that the government is looking into the matter. The Congress party has accused the BJP of spreading "fake news" and demanded answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Projects Funded by USAID
The seven projects funded by USAID are focused on various sectors, including:
- Agriculture and Food Security Programmes: Aiming to improve agricultural productivity and food security in India.
- Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH): Providing access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
- Renewable Energy: Promoting the use of renewable energy sources in India.
- Disaster Management and Health: Strengthening India's disaster management capabilities and improving healthcare services.
- Sustainable Forests and Climate Adaptation Programme: Promoting sustainable forest management and climate adaptation practices.
- Energy Efficiency Technology Commercialization and Innovation Project: Promoting energy efficiency and innovation in India.
