New Delhi:  A person was killed and six others were injured when a section of the roof at Delhi Airport's Terminal-1 collapsed onto cars, including taxis, amid heavy rain early Friday. Video footage accessed by Republic TV captures the aftermath, showing a hatchback crushed under the collapsed roof. Officials and bystanders are seen actively participating in the rescue operations at the airport.

The incident happened around 5 am at the departure area of Terminal 1 (T1) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) amid heavy rains in the national capital. The civil aviation ministry on Friday said heavy rain has resulted in the collapse of the canopy of Delhi airport T1. "As a result of which flights to & from Terminal 1 have been closed till further notice. Alternate arrangements are being made for the smooth operation of the flights," the ministry said in a post on X.

Flight Operations at T1 Hit

Following the incident, flight operations have been suspended at Delhi airport's Terminal 1, which is used for domestic flights, till further notice. T1 has only domestic flight operations by IndiGo and SpiceJet. The airport -- which has three terminals T1, T2 and T3 -- handles around 1,400 flight movements daily.

According to airport operator DIAL (Delhi International Airport Ltd), arrivals of flights at T1 continued till 1030 hours. The operations at the terminal have been suspended. It will resume after a thorough inspection.

IndiGo flights that were to arrive at and depart from T1 are being shifted to T2 and T3 while the flights of SpiceJet are being shifted to T2, DIAL said. Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohun Naidu visited the airport to take stock of the situation and also met with the injured people admitted at the Safdarjung hospital in the national capital.

Sources in the know said that soon after the incident at around 5 am, it was decided to suspend the flight departures while passengers who were already inside the terminal took their flights.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), a consortium led by GMR Group, is the operator of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in the national capital. "We sincerely regret this disruption and apologise for any inconvenience caused." the spokesperson said.

An investigation has been ordered into the roof collapse at Delhi airport's Terminal 1 on Friday early morning that left one dead and six injured, with Naidu announcing that a thorough inspection of the structure at the airport will be carried out.
