SFI activist places shades over Mahatma Gandhi’s statue, video emerges
New Delhi: SFI (Students' Federation of India) activist, Adeen Nazar, landed himself in trouble for an act deemed disrespectful towards Mahatma Gandhi. The Edathala Police in Ernakulam have registered a case against the final-year law student under sections 153 (inciting riots) and 426 (mischief) following a viral video, where he is seen placing sunglasses on a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
Moreover, he adorned the statue with a Christmas wreath during the incident that reportedly occurred on December 21. The brief six-second video stirred controversy and prompted the police to take action against the student leader. The incident has caused significant uproar, with the video being widely shared in various college WhatsApp groups.
Following the incident, KSU (Kerala Students Union) State General Secretary Al Ameen AA has lodged a complaint against Adeen Nazar. However, SFI Ernakulam district secretary Arjun Babu countered this, asserting that Nazar is not recognized as a leader within the SFI.
On the contrary, the complainant, Al Ameen AA, asserted that Nazar is indeed an active member of the SFI. He further conveyed that the KSU has urged for decisive action from both the law college authorities and the leadership of the SFI. Ameen expressed dissatisfaction, stating that their demands for action had seemingly fallen on deaf ears within the SFI ranks. The conflicting perspectives on Nazar's affiliation and the subsequent calls for accountability have intensified the controversy surrounding the incident at Bharath Mata College.
According to Edathala CI PJ Noble, the accused, Adeen Nazar, will be summoned for questioning. Since the charges against him are bailable offences, there is the possibility that he could get bail after the arrest formalities are completed.
