India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G20 Summit at Osaka, Japan on 28 June to discuss important issues covering security and trade matters shared between India and the USA.
Prior to the one on one with US President Donald Trump, PM Modi had a meeting with both Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and President Trump (the Japan-America-India 'JAI' grouping), laying foundations for the bilateral talks between India and the US. Matters regarding 5G technology with a specific focus on its security implications were discussed, following which the leaders and delegates of US and India held talks.
The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi was termed 'productive' by Ivanka Trump, in a video put out by the White House on Twitter regarding the talks between the two leaders. PM Modi and President Trump are said to have discussed 5G technology and its security implications along with the trade relationship between the two countries, deeming India as a critical security and trade partner. Issues related to Iran and national security also featured in the talk between the two leaders as PM Modi called for peace in the Indo-Pacific region.
"We are here at the G20 at Osaka. The PM Modi and PM Abe just concluded a meeting with the President talking about 5G technology focusing particularly on security implications - a really important meeting - and laid the foundations for a subsequent productive conversation - a one-on-one meeting between the President and PM Modi where the same issues were covered, of course, 5G and the trade relations between the US and India - a critical security partner, trade partner and ally. So it was a productive discussion. Everything from Iran to national security was covered by the President and his delegation with his Indian counterparts. And it's been a productive morning to say the least." she said.
