New Delhi: Several states including the national capital are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall today along with thunderstorms, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its weather bulletin.

The weather agency has issued an 'orange' alert for today (July 2) and for Wednesday (July 3). From July 3 to 5, the weather agency is predicted to have a generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The minimum temperature in the national capital today is likely to hover around 31 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature may reach 40 degrees Celsius. However, the mercury level is expected to hover at around 31 degrees Celsius during the day, with the wind speed around 4.74.

Meanwhile, the IMD tweeted that Gujarat's Saurashtra and Kutch, and the southern part of the state have also been predicted to receive rain during the wee hours of the day.

Heavy rains battered Gujarat for the second consecutive day on Monday, July 1, with Kalyanpur taluka in Devbhumi Dwarka district receiving 174 mm of rainfall till 6 pm, PTI reported.

"Orange alert has been issued for Saurashtra, Kutch, Goa, regions of Madhya Pradesh. A red alert and warning of heavy rainfall has been issued for Gujarat...Heavy rainfall is expected in North India. An orange alert has been issued for Haryana, West UP & Uttarakhand. Moderate rainfall is expected in Delhi...Rainfall will continue in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and Meghalaya," IMD scientist Soma Sen said.

This comes as Delhi recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall on Friday, the highest since 1936 for  June. Additionally, six rain-related deaths were reported on Saturday, raising the toll to 11 in the first two days since the Monsoon arrived, PTI reported.

In the aftermath of these torrential rains in parts of Delhi-NCR on Friday, Delhi Water Minister and AAP leader Atishi, on Sunday, announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs each to the families of Delhi rain victims.

The Water Minister, recently on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the release of Delhi's share of water from Haryana, took to X and said, "Several deaths have been reported on 28th June, after extreme rainfall of 228mm in 24 hours. The families of all those who lost their lives will be given a compensation of ₹10 lakhs. Directions have been given that this compensation reaches the grieving families speedily."
