Woman Doctor Found Dead At Govt Medical College In Kolkata, Rape Suspected

Kolkata: In mysterious circumstances, a semi-nude body of an on-duty female post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor was found inside the seminar hall of a government-run hospital in Kolkata on Friday. 

According to police, the deceased, a second-year student of the chest medicine department of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. 

Injury Marks on Body

According to hospital authorities, the body of the deceased bore injury marks.

"She was on-call duty yesterday. She also had dinner with her juniors at around 2 AM then went to the seminar room since there is no separate on-call room to take some rest. In the morning, we found her body there," a doctor of the hospital said. 

On the matter, police said that inputs are being taken from the doctors, nurses, and other staff over the incident.

A senior official at the hospital said that a three-member panel was constituted by the authorities to probe into the death of the doctor.

Doctors Allege Matter Being ‘Suppressed’

A senior member of the Association of Health Service Doctors, Dr Manas Gumta, alleged that there were attempts to "suppress" the matter.

"This is unprecedented and never happened in Bengal. The most unfortunate thing is that now there are attempts to suppress fact and make it look like a case of suicide. The post-mortem examination should be conducted on camera by an expert not associated with the hospital," Gumta said.

BJP Slams TMC

In a post on X, Amit Malviya Incharge of BJP IT Deparment said that Mamata Banerjee is trying supress the matter. 

“A woman doctor, in a leading Govt hospital in Kolkata, raped and murdered. Her naked body found from the duty room. Mamata Banerjee Govt is trying to hide the crime. Kolkata Police has been asked to cover up, show it as suicide. Media is not being allowed in. Repeat: no woman, from #Sandeshkhali to Chopra, is safe in West Bengal,” Malviya posted on X.
