New Delhi: While many may consider the Vande Bharat Express or Rajdhani Express as the most prestigious trains in India, there exists a train that holds even higher priority, commanding other special trains to yield.
When an accident is reported by the guard or locomotive pilot to the nearest station or divisional control room, the Indian Railways initiates the deployment of Accident Relief Trains and Accident Relief Medical Trains.
Accident Relief Trains Capable of 160 kmph
For faster initial response and for quickest possible medical attention and restoration, the Indian Railways has also inducted Self Propelled Accident Relief Trains (SPART) capable of 160 kmph speed on IR system.
Indian Railways assumes full responsibility for all rescue and relief efforts.
The Indian Railways has a structured system in place for managing accidents using its own resources.
All Accident Relief Trains and Accident Relief Medical Vans have pre-defined beats, inspection schedules and response times. In addition, there are 90 Breakdown Cranes of various capacities in the Indian Railway system.
Indian Railways is also replacing its locomotive-hauled Accident Relief Medical Vans (ARMVs) with Self-Propelled Accident Relief Medical Vans (SPARMVs) to improve response during disaster. Specification of high speed Self Propelled Accident Relief Trains (HS-SPARTs) with the speed of 160 kmph has been finalized and it is planned to be procured in addition to the existing 110 kmph SPART.
Additionally, in order to improve the capacity during restoration, 175 Tonnes cranes are under procurement which is an upgradation over existing 140 T cranes available with Indian Railways. The concept of the golden hour has also been recognised to expedite response time during disasters.
