Pond in Bihar stolen: Water removed, sand stolen and surface flattened in one night
Darbhanga pond stolen: Land mafia emptied, built hut. Water scarcity persists despite Bihar's Jal Jeevan Hariyali Mission. Pond count reduced from 300 to 84.
A pond has been stolen in Darbhanga, Bihar. Yes, you heard it right. There are several news stories about things getting stolen in Bihar, but this one will be one of the most unimaginable. This pond in the Kadirabad area falls under the Vishwavidyalaya Police Station. After getting the information, the SDPO and DSP, Amit Kumar, visited the location, and they found no sign of the pond, which was there one night before.
A video has gone viral on social media. According to the locals, the land mafia came, removed the water from the pond, took away the sand, flattened the surface, and constructed a hut over it.
The locals have repeatedly reported this to the police and said that the filling of the pond has been happening for the past few weeks. And, also, there used to be hundreds of people present there whenever they flattened the land.
Darbhanga came under water shortage even after being a water-rich region, and the drinking water accessibility has also gone down. According to a report, Darbhanga had more than 300 ponds, which were reduced to 213 by the 1990s, and as of 2020, the number was 84.
The Jal Jeevan Hariyali Mission of the Bihar government aims at water conservation, but the continuous encroachment of the land mafia has defeated this plan.
