Hariyali Teej is a vibrant Hindu festival observed by married women in the North Indian states of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Rajasthan’s Jaipur is famous for one of its well-known Teej festivities.

Timing

The Hariyali Teej Festival typically falls during the Hindu month of Sawan (July-August) and marks the onset of the monsoon season.

Significance

It is an auspicious festival marked by fasting, prayers, and sacred rituals offered to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for marital prosperity.

“Teej represents the ties between wife Parvati and husband Shiva. The festival commemorates Parvati’s unwavering dedication to her husband. When Indian women look for her blessings during Teej, they do so as a means of achieving a strong marriage — and a quality husband. Not only does Teej center around a strong marriage, but it also focuses on the happiness and health of children,” states Haryana Art & Cultural Affairs.

Preparation

During the celebration of Teej, women adorn themselves in their best green outfits and other accessories. To fancy the well-set outfit, married women can be seen covered in versatile patterns of mehendi on their hands and feet. Besides, dressing up, they sing festival songs and swing and swing fastened to a big tree branch.

Shubh Muharat

According to Drik Panchang, a well-known Hindu Calendar website, the Shubh Muharat starts at 7:52 pm on August 6 and ends at 10:05 pm on August 7.

This year, the Hariyali Teej Festival falls on August 7, 2024.
