When it comes to math, science and space, ancient Indian texts have always been advanced. Vedic astrology is a system of astrology that originated in India over thousands of years ago. The term "Vedic" is derived from the vedas, which are the oldest sacred texts of hinduism and serve as the foundation for this astrological tradition. Unlike western astrology, which is primarily based on the tropical zodiac, vedic astrology relies on the sidereal zodiac.

Here are some key features of vedic astrology.

Twelve houses and planets

Similar to western astrology, vedic astrology involves the use of twelve houses, each representing different aspects of life, and nine planets, including the sun and moon. However, vedic astrology places a strong emphasis on the moon's placement, known as the moon sign.

Sidereal zodiac

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is based on the fixed positions of stars in the sky. This is in contrast to western astrology, which predominantly uses the tropical zodiac based on the position of the sun.

Nakshatras

Vedic astrology also takes into account the concept of nakshatras, which are lunar mansions or constellations. These 27 nakshatras play a crucial role in determining the characteristics and qualities associated with an individual's birth chart, also called “janm-kundali”.

Dashas

Dashas are planetary periods used in vedic astrology to analyse the timing of events in a person's life. Each major period is further divided into sub-periods, providing a detailed timeline of planetary influences.

Karma and free will

Vedic astrology views life as a journey influenced by karma (actions) from past lives. It emphasises the idea that while certain events are destined, individuals have free will and the ability to make choices that can shape their future. Nothing is fully pre-determined.

Vedic astrology is deeply intertwined with hindu philosophy and spirituality. It is utilised for various purposes, including personal guidance, matchmaking, and predicting auspicious times for important life events. Practitioners of vedic astrology, known as jyotish, undergo extensive training to interpret birth charts and provide insights into an individual's life path based on the positions of celestial bodies at the time of their birth. Jyotish and vedic astrology has been a part of Indian traditions in many spheres, right from birth to career predictions to marriage.
