Bhai Dooj: Importance of the festival and why is it celebrated

Diwali begins with Dhanteras which is followed by Chhoti Diwali, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and finally Bhai Dooj. The special Hindu festival known as Bhai Dooj is celebrated for the eternal bond between different siblings. This year the festival will be celebrated on October 29, 2019. On the auspicious day of Bhai Dooj, the sister prays to god for the well-being, and prosperity of their brother. In return, the bother is said to follow their responsibilities of caring and loving their sisters. With a decorated thali containing sweets and coconut, the sister ceremonies the occasion by putting a tilak mark on the forehead of their brothers followed by an aarti of him.

Why is Bhai Dooj Celebrated?

As per the history, After killing the demon Narkasur, Lord Krishna visited his sister, Subhadra. By making the occasion special his sister greeted her brother with sweets and flowers. She also applied a vermilion tilak on his forehead and therefore the festival of Bhai Dooj was celebrated. The festival is also known as Bhaubeej, Bhai Tika and Yama Dwitiya.

Significance of Bhai Dooj

The festival has a literal meaning attached to it, 'Bhai' means brother and 'Dooj' means the second day after the new moon. The auspicious festival is not only said to celebrate the bonding between the brother and sister but also is said to protect their relationship from evil and bring prosperity in their lives. The festival is celebrated in different states in India with unalike rituals. Bhai Dooj is known as Bhai Phota in West Bengal, Yama Dwitiya in southern India and Bhau Beej in Maharastra. The basic significance of Bhai Dhooj is the feeling and emotion behind celebrating this wonderful festival. While revealing and rejuvenating the eternal love of brother and sister.
