Murder and mayhem abound in mystery novels and continue to intrigue the reading public as intensely as they did decades back. With the advent of new authors and fresh ideas, the genre has only been enriched. Here are some of the most brilliantly written murder mysteries- and certainly some of the best books of 2019.
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
This is bound to be one of the best murder mystery books to read in 2019. The novel revolves around Alicia and Gabriel- the picture-perfect couple that seems to have everything going for themselves. However, one night, Alicia shoots Gabriel five times and stops speaking altogether. She is admitted to a mental institution, and her case intrigues a psychotherapist who takes it upon himself to treat her. What follows is a mystery so bizarre and twisted that the reader will find themselves glued to every page.
The 18th Abduction (Women’s Murder Club Series #18) by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Three friends enjoying an innocent night out vanish without a trace, and then a body turns up. Lindsay, the chief of police is badgered by the press and the compromised safety of her hometown. Together with her best friend, crime investigator Cindy, Lindsay must now strive to solve the murder before more bodies start piling up.
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
A supernatural tale set in the real world, Ninth House, as Stephen King rightly describes it, is “impossible to put down.” Alex Stern is the only survivor of a deadly incident, and she is eager to start her year at Yale. However, when a girl is murdered on the campus, Alex is unwilling to accept the cause provided by authorities, especially because she is aware of the secret societies in Yale that dabble in forbidden magic. Murder mystery enthusiasts should definitely add this one to their list of books to read before the year ends.
Redemption by David Baldacci
A gripping tale of mistakes and their consequences, this murder mystery revolves around Detective Amos Decker. He finds himself doubting his own judgement after a man who he put behind bars years ago is killed. It was the dying man’s last wish that Decker clear his name, for he claimed to be innocent, but the task at hand is not easy- someone is ready to shed blood to keep the secret from getting out.
