Malgudi Days

The words Malgudi Days are enough to send almost every Indian into nostalgia. R. K. Narayan’s magical and fictional town of Malgudi has touched many lives with its story and characters. This collection of stories has received rating of 4.21 on Goodreads. Malgudi Days paints a portrait of various types of people, of typical Indian village life, and encapsulates the essence of India. It was first published in 1942.

The Palace of Illusions

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni hit a masterstroke with the publication of The Palace of Illusions in 2008. The book is a retelling of the Indian epic Mahabharat but with an interesting twist. The story is narrated from the point of view of Draupadi, who is also known as Panchaali. Panchaali’s life with her five husbands, her struggles with identity, and her friendship with Lord Krishna has been traced well by Divakaruni. The readers have given the book a total rating of 4.15 on Goodreads.

A Suitable Boy

A hefty novel of around 1400 pages, Vikram Seth’s A Suitable Boy is the first of the series. The novel was published in the year 1993. A Suitable Boy deals with the search of a suitable groom for Lata Mehra. The novel is a great combination of multi-ethnicity, large Indian families, love, sadness and humour. Readers on Goodreads have given the novel a rating of 4.11.

The Immortals of Meluha

The Immortals of Meluha is set in 1900 BC, tracing Shiva’s journey from being a rough and wild Tibetan to the Mahadev of India. Author Amish has based Meluha on the Indus Valley Civilization. Amish has excellently blended in mythology with fiction in this Shiva Trilogy, of which The Immortals of Meluha is the first part.
