This primeval festival, celebrated with immense devotion and warmth, holds a special place in the hearts of millions of devotees across the world. Chhath Puja: Gratitude to Surya Dev

Chhath Puja, also known as Surya Shashti, is a four-day festival that typically falls in October or November. Devotees gather to express their gratitude to Surya Dev for sustaining life on Earth. The festival holds immense cultural and religious gravitas, primarily observed in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and certain regions of Nepal.  

Chhath Puja: Significance  

Chhath Puja is a sincere expression of thanks and adoration to Surya Dev. The ceremonies are thought to cleanse the mind and soul, giving prosperity, happiness, and longevity to followers and their families. The festival also develops a sense of community by bringing people together to celebrate and share happy memories.

Chhath Puja: Rituals and Traditions

Nahai Khai (November 17th 2023): The festivities begin with devotees taking a holy dip in rivers, ponds, or other water bodies. This ritual symbolizes the cleansing of the body and soul. Nahai Khai muhurat to be observed from Morning 06:45, till evening 05:47.  

Kharna (November 18th 2023): On the second day, devotees observe a fast throughout the day, breaking it only after sunset. The evening witnesses elaborate rituals involving the preparation of kheer (sweetened rice pudding) and fruits, which are then offered to the Sun God.  Kharna puja muhurat is to be observed from Morning 06:46, till evening 05:26.  

Sandhya Arghya (November 19th 2023): The most crucial day of Chhath Puja involves the worship of the setting sun. Devotees gather at riverbanks, water bodies, or specially constructed ponds to offer their prayers, fruits, and thekua (a traditional sweet). The atmosphere is charged with devotion and the sound of Vedic hymns. Sandhya Arghya muhurat is to be observed from Morning 06:46, till evening 05:26 respectively.  

Usha Arghya (November 20th 2023): On the final day, devotees return to the water bodies to witness the sunrise and offer prayers to the rising sun. This marks the culmination of Chhath Puja, and devotees break their fast, expressing gratitude for the successful completion of the rituals. Usha Arghya muhurat to be observed from Morning 06:47, till evening 05:26.
