Dev Diwali 2023: Date, history and significance of the festival
Dev Diwali also known as Dev Deepavali will be celebrated on November 26 this year. The festival is celebrated with vigour and fervour in Varanasi.
Dev Diwali, also known as Dev Deepawali or the Diwali of the Gods, is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Kartik according to the Hindu calendar. The auspicious festival is celebrated with great fanfare in the city of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh and some parts of Gujarat. It is believed that Lord Shiva defeated the demon on this day, and hence, Dev Diwali is also known as Tripura Utsav.
When is Dev Diwali?
The celebrations begin on the Ekadashi tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha and end on the fifth day, which is the Kartik Purnima tithi (full moon night). In 2023, Dev Diwali falls on November 26.
History, significance of Dev Diwali
Dev Diwali has its roots in ancient Hindu mythology and is closely associated with the legend of Lord Shiva. According to the Puranas, on this auspicious day, the Gods are believed to descend to the holy city of Varanasi to bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges. The city is said to be filled with divine energy and celestial beings, creating a spiritually charged atmosphere.

Dev Diwali is renowned for the grand Ganga Aarti (worship with light) held on the ghats of Varanasi. The riverbanks come alive with thousands of earthen lamps, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Lighting lamps or diyas hold immense significance during Dev Diwali. It is believed that the light from these lamps welcomes the Gods and symbolises the victory of light over darkness. Devotees illuminate their homes and surroundings, creating a luminous ambience.

People offer prayers to Lord Shiva and other deities on this day, seeking their blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual well-being. Temples are adorned with lights and decorations, and special ceremonies are organized to mark the occasion.
