Diwali , the festival of lights, signifies the victory of good over evil and is deeply rooted in Hindu tradition. In 2024, this historic celebration occurs on October 31, marked by the new moon of Kartik month, the darkest day of the year. This auspicious occasion commemorates Lord Ram’s return to Ayodhya after the heroic act of saving his wife Lordess Sita, considered an incarnation of Laxmi Devi, from the demon king Ravana, symbolizing hope and renewal.

Five-day long Diwali festivities: Know all about the significance of each day

The festivities span five days, starting with Dhanteras, where devotees honour Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber, the deities of wealth and prosperity. This day is ideal for purchasing gold and jewellery. Following Dhanteras is Choti Diwali, or Narak Chaturdashi, which celebrates Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura.

The third day is the main event, featuring Lakshmi Puja. Homes are illuminated with candles and diyas as families invite prosperity and happiness into their lives. This is followed by Govardhan Puja, which honour the day Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill to protect his villagers from severe rain. The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj, a day dedicated to the bond between brothers and sisters, where sisters pray for their brothers’ well-being.
