Chhath Puja 2024 began on Tuesday, November 5. This annual four-day celebration brings devotees together to honour Lord Surya and his sister, Chhathi Maiya. Today, November 7, marks the third day, also known as Sandhya Arghya. It is a festival which is mainly observed by women to pray for the well-being and happiness of their sons and family.

Across India, devotees observe fasts, prepare sattvic food and sweet dishes as offerings to Lord Surya, and participate in feasting afterwards.

Significance of Sandhya Arghya, Chhath Puja 2024

On Sandhya Arghya, devotees offer evening prayers to the setting sun, which symbolizes life-giving energy. It is believed that performing Sandhya Arghya purifies the mind, body, and soul.

Rituals of Sandhya Arghya, Chhath Puja 2024

  • During Sandhya Arghya, devotees dress in clean attire, carry traditional offerings like fruits, flowers, and Thekua, and gather at riverbanks, ponds, or other water bodies to perform the ritual.
  • Standing waist-deep in water and facing the setting sun.
  • Devotees offer Arghya with bamboo trays or baskets, representing the bond between nature and the divine.
  • Hymns are chanted while offering prayers to the Sun God, and after the ritual, According to Drik Panchang, this is the only time of the year when water is offered to the setting sun.
  • Prasad or Bhog is shared with family and friends after performing the main ritual.
  • The fast continues until the following morning when devotees perform Usha Arghya.
  • On the third main day of Chhath Puja, a waterless fast is observed for the entire day. Offering water to the setting sun is the main ritual of this day. . The fast on the third day continues throughout the night and is broken after sunrise the next day.
