Chhath Puja Ghats In Patna: All You Should Know About Surya Argha
As the most anticipated festival approaches, preparations are underway to host devotees.
Chhath Puja is another Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Surya. This year, the four-day celebration of Chhath Puja begins on November 5 and continues until November 8. During this period, married women fast and pray for their sons and families.
Names and aspects of different days of Chhath Puja
The festival is mainly celebrated across India’s Bihar and the neighbouring country Nepal. The first day of Chhath Puja is known as Nahai Khai, on this day devotees take a dip in the holy water, and women who observe Chhatt fast eating only once a day.
The second day of Chhath Puja is known as Kharna, on this day devotees abstain from eating and drinking fluid, starting from sunrise to sunset, and then immediately the fasting is broken after offering food to the Sun God.
The third is the main day of Chhath Puja, the rituals are almost the same as the second day but offering water to the Sun God is considered important and sacred, and according to Drik Panchang, this is the only time in a year when water is offered to a setting sun.
Lastly, the fourth day is known as Usha Arghya, when devotees offer Arghya to the rising sun.
Cleanliness drive for Chhath Puja 2024
As the most anticipated festival approaches, preparations are underway to host devotees. Cleanliness drives are also being carried out in areas like NIT Ghats which was conducted by the IEC team at Mahendru Ghat in Nutan Rajdhani Zone, as per Patna Municipal Corporation, to maintain the ghat ready for Chhatt Puja in the capital city of Bihar .
Recently, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also went on inspections to Chhath Ghats. His official X handle (previously known as Twitter) posted, “Inspected Chhath Ghats in preparation for the grand festival of folk faith Chhath-2024. Various Ganga Ghats from Nasriganj Ghat to Kagan Ghat were inspected by steamer. Instructions have been given to ensure all necessary arrangements at Chhath Ghats so that Chhath devotees do not face any problem in offering Arghya.”

Some of the popular ghats where Chhath Puja is celebrated are Gandhi Ghat, Patna College Ghat, Kadam Kuan Ghat, NIT Ghat, Digha Ghat, Alamganj Ghat, Dashrath Manjhi Ghat, Rajendra Setu Ghat, Nasriganj Ghat, Kagan Ghat.

Surya Arghya is a ritual where devotees offer water to the Sun God, Surya, as a mark of respect and gratitude. Devotees prepare a copper or brass vessel filled with water. And face the rising or setting Sun and hold the vessel in their cupped hands. Ensure to chant mantras while offering the water to the Sun God. Surya Arghya is believed to bring health, wealth, and prosperity to the family.
