Dhanteras is a Hindu festival of wealth and prosperity. Dhanteras is marked as the beginning of the Diwali celebrations and people celebrate Dhanteras by buying gold. According to an age-old tradition that buying ornaments brings wealth to your home. Dhanteras will be falling on October 25, 2019.

Significance

The word Dhanteras is made of two words, ‘Dhan’ which means money or wealth and ‘Teras’ which means the thirteenth day of the Krishna Paksha of Lunar Month Kartik. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi emerged out of the ocean on this day. Therefore, there is a practice of worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, the god of wealth on the auspicious day of Trayodashi. The belief is that purchasing some form of precious metals like gold, silver or copper brings good luck to the family on this day. People also buy silver and brass utensils and keep them in the East direction of their home. It is also said that buying a broomstick on Dhanteras signifies sweeping out poverty and misery from the house.

The most preferred item for Dhanteras is the idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi which are to be worshipped on Diwali. It is believed that buying 11 Gomti Chakras brings health and prosperity to your family. Some people even buy whole coriander plant on Dhanteras, worship it on Diwali and then sow some of the grains in a pot.

According to Hindu customs, it is advised not to buy iron or aluminium utensils on this day. The elders also advice to avoid bringing empty dishes into the house and the colour black on the auspicious day of Dhanteras. Each family has its own set of beliefs and rituals that they follow and this is what makes festivals in India so interesting.
