With the preparation of lip-smacking dishes and drawing motifs of rangoli at the threshold of the house, people celebrate the auspicious festival with unmatched devotion and warmth. Dhanteras, popularly known as Dhanayotradashi, marks the first day of the festival of Diwali. Here are all the details about Dhanteras rituals and Dhanteras Puja Muhurat.
Dhanteras rituals
According to the Hindu mythology, Dhanteras is celebrated as Laksmi Puja in the honour of Goddess Lakshmi. The Goddess is offered a ‘Naivaideya’ of traditional sweets consisting of dry fruits and devotional songs or bhajans are sung in the praise of the Goddess. To indicate the long-awaited arrival of the festival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder at the entrance of the house. Many people believe in buying gold and silver articles on the day of Dhanteras, as it is considered that the purchase of any new special metal brings fortune and wealth in the house. In rural areas, farmers decorate and adorn their cattle on the occasion of Dhanteras, which marks their respect towards their only source of income.
Dhanteras muhurat
According to Hindu mythology, Lakshmi Puja is performed mostly in the evenings with tiny clay pots, popularly known as diyas, which are lit to drive away from the evil spirits. According to the folklore, Lakshmi Puja is performed to prevent Yama, the host of death to avert untimely death. Here is the muhurat of Dhanteras Puja;
