Hariyali Teej, a revered Hindu festival, will be observed on August 7, 2024. Celebrated on the third day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Sawan, this festival honours the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. 

It is marked by married women who undertake a rigorous fast, adorn themselves with mehendi, and wear traditional attire, predominantly in shades of green or red. This year, both married women and single girls seeking a good match will observe this significant fast, which typically lasts about 24 hours and is often observed without food or water.

The fast is notably challenging as it is largely nirjala, meaning no water is consumed. However, exceptions are sometimes made for pregnant women and the ill, who may be allowed to consume fruit and water depending on individual family practices. To ensure a smooth and meaningful fasting experience, here are essential dos and don’ts to follow.

Dress ethnic: Wear traditional clothing such as saris or suits. Green is favored for its association with longevity, good health, and marital happiness, while red symbolizes strength, love, and devotion.

Perform rituals: Engage in aarti and prayer for the well-being of your spouse. Listen to the fast's tale, which recounts the significance of the day.

Early rise: Wake up during Brahma Muhurat, which is two hours before dawn. This time is considered auspicious for starting the day. If early rising is challenging, adjust your bedtime to ensure you wake up refreshed.

Pre-fast preparations: Adorn your hands with intricate mehendi patterns and wear green bangles, which are symbols of marital bliss.

Maintain positive atmosphere: Create a serene environment on the day of the festival. Treat elders with respect and maintain a calm demeanor.

What you should not to do during this festival?

Prioritize health: Avoid the Nirjala fast if you are pregnant or ill. Consult a doctor if you are on medication, particularly for diabetes or other conditions. First-time fasters should be especially cautious.

Avoid afternoon naps: Sleeping during the day is traditionally seen as inauspicious during the fast. Refrain from Certain Colors: Avoid wearing black or white clothing, as these colors are not considered auspicious for the festival.

Respect nature: Do not litter or harm the environment during the rituals. Respect for nature is integral to the celebration, as Maa Parvati symbolizes nature itself.
