There are several rituals observed during this day. One of the major rituals is taking an oil bath before sunrise as Lord Krishna did the same after killing Narakasura. Taking an oil bath is an attempt to seek maximum blessings by the devotees. Narak Chaturdashi goes by various names and hence the rituals also differ in different parts of the country. In Northern India, it is celebrated as Chhoti Diwali. In South India, it is celebrated as Tamil Deepavali. In Maharashtra, devotees celebrate this day with the ritual of Abhyanga Snan.
Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated by offering various items and performing certain rituals. The puja performed on this day involves oil, flowers and sandalwood. Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi are worshipped on this day. Coconuts are offered to Lord Hanuman as a part of the Pooja.
