Kerala, the city of backwaters and surreal beaches is covered with lush green tea plantations. Apart from amazing houseboats and beautiful wildlife, Kerala also offers delicious food with flavours of coconut, jaggery, and banana dominating the cuisine. Here are five desserts that are a must-try in Kerala cuisine.

Palada Payasam

Palada Payasam is a staple for all households in this state. It is made with boiling the crunchy vermicelli and rice in milk and then flavoured with cardamom, sugar, and butter. The taste and texture are added to the delicious dessert with the garnishing of raisins and cashew nuts. This sweet is a special dessert at the Onam festival.

Banana Halwa

This sweet immediately melts in your mouth, giving you an amazing after taste. Banana halwa is made with the staple ingredient of Kerala cuisine, i.e ripened bananas along with sugar, ghee, almonds, and cardamom powder. Banana halwa is a must-try dessert when in Kerala.

Neyyappam

Neyappam is one of the traditional household delicacies in Kerala. When exploring the food of Kerala, Neyyappam should definitely be on the list. Fried in ghee, this sweet and jaggery stuffed pancake not only fills the stomach but also satisfies the cravings of people. Neyappam is typically made from rice flour, coconut, cardamom, milk, ghee, and stuffed with a mixture of jaggery. This is popularly served as a tea time snack.

Unniyappam

Unniyappam is served during the celebrations of Onam Sadya and is one of the traditional and old sweets in Kerala and a variant of Neyappa. These are little ball-shaped desserts that are usually prepared at home with mashed bananas, jaggery, and coconut.

Elaneer Pudding

It is one of the most exotic dishes of Kerala cuisine. It is similar to pannacotta and is made of coconut set with gelatin. Elaneer Pudding is extremely refreshing and especially enjoyed by the localities. It is prepared with condensed milk, coconut, sugar, milk, and agar-agar. The essence of this dish has a perfect balance of sweetness, making it one of the delicious Kerala sweets.
