The cuisine of Odisha is simplistic and yet delectable. Even though the state is famous for its variety of sweet dishes but there are some dishes that you must know and must try when the next time you are in Odisha. Here is a list of some must-eat Odia dishes.
Dahibara Aloo dum from Cuttack
Dahibara Aloo dum with ghuguni is the famous street food in Cuttack and every foodie knows about it. Even at 5 am in the morning, you can find the food stalls lined up with their big pots filled with dahi baras. So basically dahi bara and aloo dum are two separate dishes which has been blended into this dish. For serving this dish, few pieces of dahi bara are first added in a bowl, topped with a dollop of aloo dum, which is again topped with ghuguni, garnished with finely chopped coriander and onion to make an irresistible savoury dish.
Puri Upma
Hailing from Berhampur, this dish speaks for itself. It is a mix of South and East cuisine in the form of Puri Upma. It is Berhampur's soul food which when eaten once will leave an unforgettable memory that you would like to revisit numerous times. For this food item, 2-3 puris are served in a plate or bowl, on top of which a bowl-shaped upma is placed. The dish is finally served after you choose your choice of curry or chutney or sambar to go on top of your dish.
Abadha
The Mahaprasad prepared in Puri's Jagannath temple is distributed at Anand Bazaar situated outside the temple. One abadha thali includes an ample amount of rice cooked in earthen pots, along with curry and sufficient dal. It is a must-have item to consume when you are in Lord Jagannath's town. One might think that plain rice, dal and curry should not be considered as a 'must eat food' but one has to taste for themselves to decide.
Mansa tarkari
Mutton Curry is the one dish that is famous all over Odisha and is a must-have dish at every non-veg eating households during special occasions. This dish tastes best when made by a slow cooking method or even in a pressure cooker. A basic mutton curry or mansa tarkari is made using big chunks of potatoes, garlic-ginger paste, cinnamon, meat masala, garam masala, and tomato-onion paste. You will find this dish being made at almost every household at their marriage reception parties.
