Vegetarians the debate between non-vegetarians about which is the best preference for a healthy diet has been on forever now. There are various non-veg options such as chicken, red meat, pork, meat and many more on the plate for them. On the other hand, vegetarians have to select from a range of milk products like cottage cheese to fulfil their protein requirements. However, that is not all, several products can substitute for non-veg dishes. On the World Food Day, here are six lesser-known substitutes for the non-veg foods. Read to know more.

Six vegetarian substitutes for non-vegetarians

  • Soya Chaap

Soya Chaap are small pieces of soya baked using skewers in a tandoor. Soya is one of the best substitutes for meat. Digging into it gives you the same chewy mouth-feel as a chicken or mutton will give. There are also benefits to the dishes. It is cheaper than non-veg and it is also cholesterol-free.

  • Tofu

Tofu, also known as bean curd, is prepared by soy milk. It might look dull, but you can spice it up by frying or grilling it. There are also many varieties of Tofu. Crispy Tofu Nuggets are something that you should try. Tofu, as it is light, you can have it in breakfast, lunch or dinner.

  • Mushrooms

Mushrooms are not just another vegetable but a good substitute to non-veg products. Mushrooms can be the perfect meaty stuffing that you are looking for. They make a replacement in sandwiches, burgers and pizzas. They taste even better when they are marinated.

  • Seitan

Seitan is popularly called as wheat gluten or wheat meat. This is because of its similarity to meat when cooked. Seitan makes for a delicious snack or food and is widely eaten. Its other advantage is that it is easy to make at home. Seitan kababs, burgers, pasta are some varieties.

  • Legumes

Common legumes include peas, beans, lentils, peanuts, chickpeas and soybeans. The different types are high in nutrition, taste, appearance and use.  They are a perfect replacement for non-vegetarian foods in stews and soups. Legumes make a good tuna substitute in a salad. They have a very little amount of fat.

  • Eggplant

The famous vegetable is also known as brinjal and can be used as a substitute in many ways. You can make an eggplant burger or eggplant fritter or as household name pakoda. It comes in a range of shapes, sizes and colours. They are rich in nutrition and fibre.
