Brain injury can lead to fatal results which are irreparable and cannot be rectified completely. Outdoor sports like soccer, hockey or sports accidents can cause brain injury, which can affect regular life on a massive scale. The new research was conducted by the National Institue of Neurological Disorders and Strokes (NINDS) and it concluded that Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) could result in extremely harmful outcomes.
What did the researchers have to say after the finding?
Traumatic microbleeds which resulted from brain injury were not even detected in CT scans due to their micro size, but reportedly with the help of latest technology in the medical world, this became possible. Now traumatic micro-bleeds can be detected in MRI scans and even the smallest microbleeds in size.
A member of the research study Lawrence Latour, Ph.D., NINDS said:
"Traumatic microbleeds may represent injury to blood vessels that occur following even minor head injury,
" He further added "While we know that damage to brain cells can be devastating, the exact impact of this vascular injury following head trauma is uncertain and requires further study."
Another member from the team of researchers Partha Mitra, who is laboratory professor at the Cold Spring Harbour Laboratory observed that the blood vessels in the brain get immensely affected post head injury, which is more than dangerous than nerve damage.
He said, "The idea is that if the mechanism is actually different, therapeutic intervention may also be different."
In the past, we have seen many popular international cricket and soccer players losing their lives on the field due to head injuries. One such incident that is etched in all our minds is that of Phillip Hughes's untimely demise after he got hit by a bouncer from the bowler and immediately collapsed on the field. The new research study findings also incline towards the creation of new TBI medicinal drugs and treatment. With new TBI medicines, a lot of difference can be made, aiding to brain-injured patients
