Even though nails are made up of dead cells, they can still give us signs and warnings about health issues. Nail colours are known to be the indicators of the lungs, liver and even heart disorders. Here are some of the nail signs we shouldn’t avoid.
Nail indicators that indicate health issues
- If your nails are pale in colour, it can be a warning sign for diseases like liver disease, anaemia, and malnutrition.
- White nails with dark rims can indicate that you are hepatitic.
- Yellow nails indicate a fungal infection. When the infection is severe, nail beds retract and get thickened. People suffering from severe thyroid, lung disease, diabetes or psoriasis may also show yellow nails.
- The blue tinge in the nails can mean either your blood is devoid of oxygen or lung issues like emphysema. Some people suffering from heart problems also show the tendency of bluish nails.
- Nails may appear in a pitted pattern indicating the early signs of psoriasis or inflammatory arthritis.
- Brittle nails that crack very easily have been seen linked to thyroid disease.
- Fungal infection is indicated when the nails split or crack easily with a yellowish hue.
- Puffy nail bed which appears red and inflamed could be a connective tissue disorder or an infection.
- If you observe dark lines beneath nails, consult your doctor immediately as it could be a melanoma.
Note: these are all the signs that have been observed in people, but it doesn’t mean that if you have split nails then you will surely get thyroid disorder.
Nail care tips
- Vitamin E oil - Massaging vitamin E oil on your cuticles is believed to cure the issues of brittle nails, cracked nails and yellow nails etc.
- Lemon juice - It is used to treat brittle nails. The lemon juice is massaged on the cuticles for 15-20 minutes and using it thrice a week can help in the growth of healthy nails.
