Messy roommate problems: Tips on how to deal with a lazy roommate

Living away from home is quite troublesome anyway. You have to manage everything of your own, right from paying the bills to cooking for yourself and cleaning the house. All these add up to the already ongoing struggles such as work for career growth and managing relationships. You are all by yourself in this big world without a family nearby to support and on whom you can depend, in the new city.

‘Home’, ah! Of course! It is the only place where you can go back to for some peace and relaxation after a long day’s work. That is the place to unwind and keep all your tensions away. But what if you come home to a kitchen sink overflowing with dirty dishes, piled up laundry, cockroaches feating over last week’s leftover pizza, the television that is always left on irrespective of the fact that even the cockroaches are not interested in watching it and beds that have been robbed off their sheets? The stink in the house is nauseating and you do not even know what that is. At one point you also hit the bathroom and the pot is dirty and stinky as hell. Familiar with the scenario? Explain your distress

The very first thing that comes while surviving your messy roommate is communication, as it is the key. Instead of pointing fingers and lobbing accusations, start the conversation by yourself. Explain what is worrying you and propose some changes that you would like to see. Make it your problem instead of your roommate’s. This frames the problem as your issue and invests your roommate to help you out. It is a much better strategy than telling your roommate what he or she does wrong and demanding better habits. In the latter situation, you will make your roommate defensive, which rarely leads to productive conversations.

Clean and organize together

If you are still wondering how to motivate your messy roommate to clean up, here is the trick for you. Maybe your roomie just prefers group activities. Some people hate cleaning as a solitary activity. Learn him or her first. If your roomie falls into this category, why not help them in cleaning? Offer to clean together, play some music, grab the cleaning supplies and have a party while you scrub and dust the grime away.
