The National Institute of Virology (NIV) in India has identified a new chickenpox-causing virus variant known as Clade-9. This variant, responsible for the varicella-zoster virus (VRZ), has been primarily prevalent in countries like Germany, the USA and the UK. However, it has now made its presence felt in India for the first time. Republic Digital reached out to Internal Medicine Experts to learn more about this emerging variant.

2 things you need to know

  • Good hygiene reduces the risk of varicella-zoster virus transmission.
  • Early recognition of chickenpox symptoms can lead to prompt medical attention and care.

What is the Varicella-Zoster virus?

Dr Urvi Maheshwari, an Internal Medicine Expert, explains, "Chickenpox and shingles are caused by VZV, classified as an alpha herpes virus. The incidence of chickenpox has significantly declined due to early childhood vaccination. Consult your doctor for preventive measures and keep chickenpox and shingles at bay."

How does Varicella-Zoster virus spread?

Dr Maheshwari emphasises, "Varicella is extremely infectious and can spread through direct contact, inhalation of aerosols containing fluid from skin lesions, and potentially via infected respiratory secretions. Close contact with infected individuals or their respiratory droplets can lead to transmission."

Notable symptoms to watch for

Dr Amit Shobhawat, an Internal Medicine Expert, highlights the symptoms of the virus, stating, "VZV, commonly known as chickenpox, begins with a low-grade fever and malaise, followed by a characteristic rash of red spots and fluid-filled blisters. Itching is common and additional symptoms may include headaches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. While most recover within two weeks, monitor for complications like pneumonia or bacterial skin infections."

Prevention tips

Dr Amit Shobhawat shares essential prevention tips from Varicella-Zoster virus, saying, "Vaccination is key; ensure your child receives the varicella vaccine. Encourage good hygiene, including frequent handwashing, especially after outdoor activities. Avoid close contact with infected individuals. Regularly disinfect commonly touched surfaces. Teach children proper respiratory etiquette to reduce airborne transmission. By following these preventive measures, parents can significantly reduce the risk of their child contracting chickenpox."

Overall, the emergence of the Clade-9 chickenpox variant in India is a reminder of the importance of vaccination and maintaining hygienic practices. As experts advise, staying informed and taking preventive measures are essential in safeguarding against this highly contagious virus.
