Being sick, even when you are relaxing at home in your bed, is not fun. The combination of body aches, fever, chills, and nasal congestion can be enough to make you feel annoyed and miserable. All these symptoms combined together can precede a cold, especially during winters. Cold is so common that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults can expect to get a cold two times a year. Most people usually prefer home remedies to cure a cold and it is totally acceptable. Fortunately, most home remedies do not have side effects. So even if they only offer limited help, they will not do any harm.

Home remedies for cold:

1.  Chicken soup

Chicken soup may not be a cure-all, but it can be a great choice when you are sick. Research suggests that enjoying a bowl of chicken soup with vegetables prepared from scratch can slow the movement of neutrophils in your body. Neutrophils are a common type of white blood cells. They help protect your body from infection. Low-sodium soup also carries great nutritional value and helps you keep hydrated.

2.  Ginger

The roots of health benefits of ginger have been touted from centuries, but now, its benefits are scientifically proven. A few slices of raw ginger in warm water may also help sooth rough throat, cough and cold. Research also suggests that it can ward off feelings of nausea that often accompany influenza. A study by the US National Library of Medicine shows that 1 gram of ginger can “alleviate clinical nausea of diverse causes”.

3.  Garlic

Garlic is one of the most-advised foods to consume during winters. It helps to keep our body warm and keep away the infectious micro-organisms. It contains the compound allicin which is known to have antimicrobial properties. Adding a garlic supplement to your diet might reduce the severity of cold symptoms. According to research by Cochrane Library, garlic has the potential to prevent you from getting sick in the first place. Thus, adding more garlic to your diet would not hurt!
