What causes Hair fall?
Age:
As we age, the level of oestrogen hormone in our body starts to drop significantly. Oestrogen level decrease can cause hair follicles to decrease in size which makes the hair thinner. This causes hair loss. Mostly more prevalent in men.
Stress:
Higher levels of stress are associated with hair fall. Increased levels of stress cause the hair follicles to become inactive. This can lead to patches of thin hair. Sometimes hair can fall even when you just simply comb through.
Hormonal Imbalance:
Hormonal imbalance is one of the major reasons for hair fall. Thyroid imbalance, some medications, certain diseases, pregnancy, and menopause can cause hormonal imbalance. Increased or decreased levels of hormones like oestrogen, testosterone causes the hair follicles to die thus giving rise to hair fall.
Conditions of the scalp:
Medical conditions of scalp like seborrheic dermatitis which is characterised by red scaly patches on the scalp can cause inflammation and sometimes hair fall.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS):
This is a common hormone disorder where the female body produces excessive male hormones like testosterone. In some women, it causes thinning of hair and hair loss.
Iron deficiency/anaemia:
Iron deficiency that is anaemia causes low levels of iron in your body. Iron boosts cell growth. Follicles are especially sensitive to a decrease in iron levels in your body. It hinders the process of hair growth.
Hereditary:
In almost 40% of people, hair loss is hereditary. Thinning of hair is common after you reach a certain age.
Lupus:
Lupus causes inflammation of skin and scalp, it results in thinning of hair, and clumps of hair can fall out in this condition.
Vitamin B12 deficiency:
Vitamin B12 is necessary for hair growth and production of new cells, Deficiency of B12 can cause hair shedding.
Sudden weight loss:
Sudden weight loss disturbs the Body Mass Index. The physical stress caused by this can send the hair follicles into an inactive state.
