Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which the patients have trouble falling asleep and thus wake up several times at night. They basically don’t have good deep sleep and thus feel tired and irritated after waking up. According to the data shared by NSF, approximately. 1% of adults suffer from an advanced sleep disorder, and 50% of the world’s population suffer from insomnia (Source: NCBI). Insomnia: Why does it happen?

Insomnia may be caused by various factors with some suffering from insomnia due to underlying health conditions like asthma, depression, arthritis, heartburn, or pain. Insomnia also varies in how long it lasts and is characterised as acute or chronic. The common causes for Insomnia include stress of any kind, emotional or physical discomfort, switching time zones while travelling (jetlag), or environmental factors like excessive light or sound to name a few. Tips for Insomniacs: How to get sound sleep when you are an Insomniac?

  • Electronics – Stay away from light before your sleeping time by keeping all your electronic devices in a different room. For waking up, set up an alarm on your table clock in your room. 
  • Circadian rhythm – According to the National Institutes of Health, resetting the body’s circadian rhythm is important for getting your sleep schedule on track. Circadian rhythm is not important just for your sleep cycle but also for the hormone release and other bodily functions in your body.
  • Naps - Avoid taking a nap in the day if you are an insomniac. Work out, complete all your physical work in the day, exhaust yourself throughout the day because being physically tired helps you to feel sleepy at night.
  • What to avoid - Avoid heavy meals, excessive coffee, and alcohol before your bedtime.
  • Workout - According to the researches, regular exercising helps in sleeping better at night.
  • Maintain a schedule - Try to maintain a proper schedule of sleeping and waking up.
  • Those suffering from insomnia due to stress can practice deep breathing exercises and guided meditation before sleeping.
  • Those affected by pain-related discomfort can take the help of hypnosis treatment to help them deflect from their pain.
