The essence of Karwa Chauth
Besides observing fast, as per tradition, women worship Goddess Parvati on the occasion of the festival. According to mythology, Goddess Parvati is the wife of Lord Shiva, who is considered as the one whose husband has a long life. During the Karwa Chauth puja, Goddess Parvati is worshipped first. Following that, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh, and Lord Kartikeya are worshipped.
Traditionally, married women who are observing the Karwa Chauth vrat, break their fast only after sighting a glimpse of the Moon and her husband in one frame, followed by Puja. While observing the day-long fast, women are generally recommended to take care of their health as well. The festival is celebrated in Kartik month on the fourth day after Purnima, according to the Hindu calendar. Women observing the Karwa Chauth fast celebrate the festival with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement for they usually get dressed in their best ethnic outfits. Applying Mehendi, buying a new set of bangles and shopping go hand-in-hand with the festivities of Karwa Chauth for ladies across north India and other regions.
