Piku
This comedy-drama, directed by Shoojit Sircar, was the story of a father and daughter who go on a trip from Delhi to Kolkata. The father-daughter pair embark on a journey of self-discovery while exploring their hometown, Kolkata in this movie. This film, which was beautifully shot at the Nonapukur Tram Depot and some parts of North Kolkata, gives us a wonderful insight into this City of Joy.
Detective Byomkesh Bakshi
The film follows Byomkesh Bakshi's first adventure as a private detective and is extensively filmed in Calcutta. This movie perfectly captured the life of Kolkata. The film is based on a Bangla classic, and Byomkesh Bakshi is a fine assimilation of all the old styles of the Bengali.
Kahaani
Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, this mystery thriller that revolves around a pregnant woman in search of her missing husband at the Durga Puja Festival in Kolkata, is definitely Bollywood's best ode to the city. Kolkata's bustling streets were the main attention grabber in this movie. In many ways, Kahaani showcases the town and its dark beauty.
Barfi
The comedy-drama movie is about a deaf-mute simpleton. The movie was filmed and partly based in Kolkatta in the 1970s. The Howrah Bridge's presence in different shots along with the trams and the references of Puchka' gives you a quintessential Kolkata vibe.
Parineeta
The romantic-musical drama of Pradeep Sarkar was based on the 1914 Bengali novella by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, and the movie was set in Kolkata. The major part of the film was shot at the James Prinsep Memorial. The movie won millions of hearts and succeeded in Kolkata largely. From Darjeeling’s toy trains to Hoogly’s Nauka, Parineeta beautifully captured it all. The movie had Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, and Sanjay Dutt in the lead roles.
