Some good books to read in the year 2019:

1. The Forest of Enchantments

The author of the book is Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. This book revisits the Ramayana from the perspective of Sita. It is about Sita’s love, her courage to forgive and forget, and to stand up for herself. If you loved the Palace of Illusions, then this book is a must-read

2. The Lies We Tell

The Lies We Tell is a YA novel written by Himanjali Sankar. The novel is dark and upsetting but is an honest reflection of what happens across schools these days. Sankar was also shortlisted for the Crossword Book Award for The Stupendous Timetelling Superdog and Talking of Muskaan, both of which focussed on mental illness and teen relationships. 

3. The Scent of God

The Scent Of God is a narrative universe by Saikat Majumdar. The sophomore novel talks about a queer love story; one part is about a true story, and another is about a contemporary twist on Homer’s Odyssey. The book is written in the mythic variety of the Igbo literary tradition.

4. The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters

Balli Kaur Jaswal, the author of this novel, is also known for his much-loved book Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows. One of Jaswal's books was chosen for Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club. The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters is a delightful, moving and life-affirming story of three sisters who have been trained by their dying mother to visit the Golden Temple and carry out her last rites.
