Cambodia is a Southeast Asian country which is rich in its cultural and historical monuments; here are five things to know before travelling to the country
Cambodia is an ancient country and boasts cultural heritage with its unique historical architecture and monuments. This Southeast Asian country has become the latest tourist attraction for tourists from all around the world. Angkor Wat is the major tourist attraction of this city. However, traveling to this beautiful country comes with its own set of risks and issues. So here are five travel tips for when you travel to the home of Angkor Wat temple.
1. Use local transport
Tuk-tuks and buses are the best options to travel in this country. Buses in Cambodia have great connectivity and hence prefer them while traveling between cities. Tuk-tuks are the best option when it comes to traveling locally. The fares for both the services are relatively cheaper than taxis.
2. Avoid crossing Cambodian border by road
Usually, tourists travel via plane to reach the country. However, many travellers are scammed when it comes to cheap bus transportation while crossing borders from countries like Vietnam. The corrupt border officials according to a media portal’s report tend to scam tourists for redoing the visa procedure even if it has already been done.
3. Avoid wandering off in rural areas
Do not wander off to rural areas and rice paddies unless you have guidance from a local since certain areas might still have unexploded mines. Most of the must-visit places in Cambodia are safe from such situations. However, consulting with a local is a safer option when exploring the country.
4. Cover up while visiting temples
Cambodia is rich in its historically prominent sites. So certain restrictions regarding clothing are meant to be followed while entering the temple. A visitor to the historical site or temple should happen in proper clothing which covers your legs and arms.
5. Do not forget your travel insurance
Cambodia has its fair share of violent history. But the locals are considered kind-hearted and friendly by several travellers. However, crime rates in the country are still high. So do not forget to get your travel insurance just in case of emergencies. Avoid travelling alone and team up with fellow backpackers. Do not wander off alone at night and use public transportation instead of walking.
