The world’s first full-scale air taxi vertiport has been uncovered at the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress in Singapore. The VoloPort is the result of a collaboration among Volocopter, the German urban air mobility and air taxi pioneer, and Skyports, the vertiport developer, owner and operator. SMART Highways editor Paul Hutton spoke to Volocopter’s founder, Alex Zosel, at the ITS World Congress ahead of the air taxi’s flight over the Marina Bay area in Singapore. Zosel told Hutton that they are not only presenting flying taxi but also displaying the first VoloPort, the first take-off and landing terminal for their flying taxi worldwide.
Volocopter and Skyports have announced that they will continue their partnership to introduce commercial air taxi services in Singapore and beyond. As part of the ITS Wolrd Congress, Volocopter and Skyports have built up the VoloPort model on the Float at Marina Bay. During the conference, numerous visitors are expected at the VoloPort, including representatives from the EU Commission, the EASA (European Union Aviation and Safety Agency), and the Ministry of Transport of many countries.

Details
The drone-like flying taxi has been experimented in Singapore and is assumed to be put into use in the next two years. The Volocopter is self-driving, but it also had a human pilot for its test flights. It has 18 propellers and sufficient space for two passengers and their luggage. The futuristic city transport was tested for around two-and-a-half minutes over water around Marina Bay. Its producers hope that the technology will help to ease polluting traffic in major cities and transform the commute of the future.
