The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has approached the Election Commission of India (EC) alleging Prime Minister Narendra Modi violated the Moral Code of Conduct after he made comments concerning IAF's Wing Commandor Abhinandan Varthaman.

Arvind Kejriwal's party's legal cell has written a letter, suggesting that PM Modi's reference of Wing Commandor Abhinandan during his exclusive interview with Republic Media Network, and the BJP using his comments on its official Twitter handle, goes against the EC's Moral Code of Conduct.

"Hon'ble Prime Minister in his interview made reference about Abhinandan the AIr Force personnel who shot down F 16 and his bravery was celebrated across country. But using his name in a interview with an intention to obtain Political gain is complete violation of the Model Code of Conduct and above mention Advisory specifically issued in this regard," read AAP's complaint to EC against PM Modi.

On Friday, PM Modi, in his first election interview ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, spoke exclusively to Republic Media Network's editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami.

It was during this interaction that he spoke about IAF Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who shot down a F-16 during IAF and PAF 'dogfight', following which his aircraft was shot down and he landed in Pakistan's territory and was detained by the Pakistan government, but was released two days later after diplomatic pressure by the Indian government.

The Prime Minister had referred to the IAF pilot's name to slam the Opposition for playing politics, and stated that the Congress and other political parties failed to stay united with the country at that very moment.

"You would know, when Abhinandan's incident happened, all Indian political parties should have united and said that we are proud of Indian forces that an F-16 was shot down. Instead, they went on saying 'when will Abhinandan return? When will Abhinandan return?' within 2 hours," the Prime Minister had said during the interview.

"Abhinandan's return talks...Ok, he was caught. The government will do what it has to do at a diplomatic level. But they (Opposition) had planned a candlelight march for Abhinandan, Pulwama, and Airstrike," he added.
